This breed that is unique to Canada owes its origin to animals imported from France between 1608 and 1660. Brought here by the first settlers, the natural and progressive inbreeding led to an appearance and conformation specific to a new breed of cow called the "Canadienne''. As the only dairy breed developed on the North American continent, it regrettably disappeared from the region and from the province of Québec during the 20th century, gradually having been replaced by the Holstein. The Charlevoix soil, typical of mountainous regions with a rough climate and poor vegetation, constitutes a natural environment for the Canadienne cow, well adapted to these rigours. The "Association de mise en valeur des bovins de race Canadienne dans Charlevoix" to which la Laiterie Charlevoixt contributes, has given itself the Mission of reintroducing the Canadienne breed in order to start up a milk production that is strongly linked to the Charlevoix countryside and to prove the viability of human-scaled family farms.
